35 BODIES There are various bodies within the University which discuss the interests of all members of the University: Senate The Senate’s tasks are anchored in the Thuringian Higher Education Act (Thüringer Hochschulgesetz, ThürHG) and the Constitution of the University. This body mainly focuses on: • resolutions, statements, recommendations (e.g. for appointing professors) • participation in electing and cancelling the mandates of the President and the Kanzler, and appointing the members of the University Supervisory Board, confirming the mandates of Vice-Presidents • awarding academic honours The Senate consists of 21 members with voting rights, i.e. representatives of teaching staff, students, academic staff, and other staff members. University Supervisory Board The University Supervisory Board provides recommendations on shaping the University’s profile and setting focuses in research and teaching as well as in developing the range of study programmes offered. • The University Supervisory Board consists of ten members with voting rights, though the Constitution of the University stipulates that at least two thirds of its members with voting rights are to be external persons. • The members of the University Supervisory Board are appointed by the Thuringian Ministry of Economy, Science, and the Digital Society for a period of four years. In addition, the University Supervisory Board is tasked with the following: • electing and cancelling the mandate of the President and electing the Kanzler • issuing resolutions and statements • accepting the Executive Board’s annual report Faculty Councils Each of the ten faculties: • formulates their own study regulations and examination regulations • can appoint teaching staff The University Supervisory Board regulates communication between the individual faculties. Student bodies All students, divided into their respective subject-related student representative committees, elect the members of the Student Representative Council. It operates as both executive and legislative body within student administration. It addresses all student-related interests to the university life. In these topic-specific units, students can engage in their activities and participate in planning projects, e.g. a student magazine Akrützel, CampusRadio and CampusTV, and campus media sources, in discussions and in many other activities. stura.uni-jena.de/stud-verwaltung
