The tradition of medical education in Jena is even more remarkable—as one of the founding faculties of the University, the Faculty of Medicine can look back on over 450 years of medical learning. Every year, the 26 clinics and polyclinics treat over 52,500 inpatients and carry out over 364,000 outpatient consultations. A total of 2,300 students of medicine and dentistry learn their professions here. Places, such as Schiller’s Garden House, the Phyletic Museum, and the memorials to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Ernst Haeckel invite you to learn more about the famous personalities closely connected to the University. By the same token, the Herbarium Haussknecht, the Oriental Coin Cabinet, and Papyrus Collection are all unique within the German academic landscape. On 4.5 hectares of space, around 10,000 species of plants from the world’s most important vegetation types are cultivated in lush outdoor areas and greenhouses. Students have free entry with their thoska card.
